What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms, resulting in a more toned and contoured appearance. This procedure is ideal for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, aging, or have persistent sagging skin that does not respond to non-surgical methods. The arm lift can improve the shape and contour of the arms, enhancing overall body proportion and confidence.

The Arm Lift Procedure

Anesthesia: The arm lift is typically performed under general anesthesia, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.

Incision Placement: Incisions are made along the inner or back of the upper arms, depending on the amount of excess skin and fat to be removed. The length and location of the incision are tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Excess Skin and Fat Removal: Excess skin and fat are carefully removed to achieve the desired arm contour. Liposuction may also be used to further refine the shape.

Closing Incisions: The incisions are closed with sutures, which are placed to minimize visible scarring and promote optimal healing.

Arm Lift FAQs

How do I know if I am a good candidate for an arm lift?

You may be a good candidate if you have loose, hanging skin on the upper arms that does not improve with diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are at or near a stable weight, in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about improving arm contour.

Arm liposuction removes excess fat through small incisions and works best when you have good skin elasticity and minimal sagging. An arm lift removes extra skin and reshapes the underlying tissue, making it better for moderate to severe laxity or “bat wings.”

You may need a medical evaluation, to adjust certain medications, and to stop smoking several weeks before surgery. Your surgeon will also guide you to arrange help at home, plan time off work, and prepare a comfortable recovery space with loose clothing and prescribed medications.

You will check in, review consent forms, and meet with your surgeon and anesthesia team before going to the operating room. After surgery, you will recover in a monitored area, receive instructions about dressings and compression garments, and most patients go home the same day with a responsible adult.

You will notice an improvement in arm contour right away, with swelling and tightness over the first few weeks. Many patients resume light activities within a few days, return to desk work in about 1 to 2 weeks, and wait 4 to 8 weeks before strenuous exercise, depending on the surgeon’s guidance.

Soreness, tightness, and mild bruising are common in the first few days. Discomfort is usually managed with prescribed pain medication, arm elevation, compression garments, and avoiding heavy lifting as directed.

Incisions are typically placed along the inside or back of the upper arm, sometimes extending into the underarm, so they are less noticeable at rest. Scars are initially red and raised, then gradually flatten and fade over time, and your surgeon may recommend specific scar care to improve their appearance.

Results are generally long-lasting when your weight remains stable and you follow a healthy lifestyle. While natural aging continues, a balanced diet and regular exercise help preserve a slimmer, more toned arm contour.

Yes, an arm lift can be combined with procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast surgery. Your surgeon will evaluate your health, goals, and total operative time to decide whether combining or staging procedures is safest for you.

Most patients return to non-strenuous work in about 1 to 2 weeks, depending on job duties. Light daily activities can often be resumed within a few days, while driving should wait until you are off prescription pain medication and can move comfortably.

Light walking is usually encouraged early in recovery. More vigorous exercise and upper body workouts are gradually resumed between 4 and 8 weeks, based on your surgeon’s instructions and your healing progress.

Potential risks include infection, bleeding, fluid accumulation, delayed wound healing, and temporary or permanent changes in sensation. There is also a risk of asymmetry or noticeable scarring, but working with a board-certified plastic surgeon and following instructions closely helps reduce these risks.

Arm lift surgery is usually considered cosmetic and is not covered by most insurance plans. Many practices offer financing options or payment plans, which you can review during your consultation.

Many healthy older adults choose arm lift surgery to address age-related arm sagging. Candidacy is based more on overall health and goals than age alone, and your surgeon will review your medical history to ensure the procedure is appropriate.

Non-surgical treatments such as energy-based skin tightening can offer modest improvement for mild laxity. However, they cannot remove significant excess skin, so an arm lift is usually the most effective option for moderate to severe sagging.
